From humble beginnings to a global leader in cleaning solutions

Since 1906, Nilfisk has been driven by a clear purpose: to improve quality of life through cleaner, healthier, and safer environments. What began in a small Copenhagen workshop has grown into a global organization delivering cleaning solutions to customers in more than 100 countries.

From the beginning, Nilfisk has been shaped by practical innovation, close collaboration, dependable performance, and a strong sense of responsibility. These principles continue to guide how we design solutions, work with customers, respond to the cleaning challenges of today, and create a cleaner future.

From invention to enterprise

Nilfisk was founded by Danish engineer P.A. Fisker, who believed technology could fundamentally improve how people lived and worked. At a time when cleaning was manual, physically demanding, and inefficient, Fisker set out to develop machines that reduced effort and improved hygiene.

Originally destined for a teaching career, Fisker grew restless and became fascinated by the emerging potential of electrical power. In 1898, he enrolled at the School for Electro Engineering in Copenhagen, and after graduating, travelled through Germany, the United States, and Scotland, studying new technologies and industrial methods.

In 1906, armed with limited funds and an obsolete lathe, he moved to Copenhagen and began producing small electric motors in a backyard workshop. As the business grew, Fisker recognized the need to combine technical ingenuity with commercial strength. He partnered with former colleague H.M. Nielsen. Together, they laid the foundation for a company built on both invention and execution — a balance that continues to define Nilfisk today.

In 1910, Nilfisk introduced Europe’s first electric vacuum cleaner, transforming household cleaning by replacing hours of sweeping and carpet beating with a faster, more efficient solution. This breakthrough marked the beginning of Nilfisk’s long-standing focus on practical innovation driven by real-world needs.

Performance with purpose

Nilfisk’s approach to innovation has always been grounded in real-world needs. When The Silent Dane was launched in 1932, it quickly became known as one of the quietest vacuums of its time. It demonstrated that true performance isn’t only about suction, it’s also about supporting comfort, well-being, and uninterrupted work.

Expanding into industry and professional cleaning

As cleaning needs evolved beyond the home, Nilfisk expanded into professional and industrial environments.

During the 1950s, Nilfisk developed industrial vacuums and scrubbers that replaced labor-intensive manual cleaning and enabled faster, more hygienic cleaning of large surfaces. Machines like the GA70, launched in 1958, became known for exceptional durability and reliability, often remaining in operation for decades

At the same time, Nilfisk advanced filtration technologies to protect users from harmful dust. These capabilities were trusted in highly specialized applications, including use by NASA in the 1960s to safeguard astronauts.

Growing globally through collaboration

Nilfisk’s development has always been closely tied to collaboration. In 1914, the company opened its first foreign office in Berlin, marking the start of its international expansion. In the 1920s, installment and leasing programs made professional cleaning equipment more accessible, strengthening long-term customer relationships.

Over the decades, partnerships with dealers, distributors, OEMs, and service teams allowed Nilfisk to combine global expertise with local insight. This collaborative model enabled the company to adapt to different markets, industries, and regulatory environments — and remains central to how Nilfisk operates today.

Responsibility has been part of Nilfisk’s approach for generations. In the 1930s, the company began refurbishing returned machines to extend their working life — an early example of circular thinking.

Later innovations, such as Ecoflex technology introduced in 2009, gave operators control over water, energy, and detergent use, helping reduce resource consumption while maintaining performance. Our commitment to environmental and social responsibility has been recognized with the Ecovadis Gold rating for four consecutive years. But for us, recognition is secondary. What matters is delivering solutions that help customers reduce waste, avoid downtime, and operate more efficiently.
