Nilfisk Launches Innovative CO2 Calculator to Support Sustainable Choices

New feature on nilfisk.com provides most transparent product emissions data to date among industrial cleaning companies.

Nilfisk, a global leader in cleaning solutions, has announced the launch of its new CO2 calculator, the first of its kind in the industry. This easy-to-use tool is designed to estimate the carbon footprints of Nilfisk's machines during their operating phase, providing valuable insights for customers.

The CO2 calculator, now available on Nilfisk's website, nilfisk.com, allows customers to access emissions data for their existing machines or compare the footprints of potential new purchases. Sales teams can also leverage this comprehensive emissions data to enhance discussions with current and prospective customers.

Increasing demand for emissions data

Malene Thiele, VP Global ESG & Sustainability at Nilfisk, emphasized the importance of this tool: "Many of our customers are keen to reduce their emissions. With the CO2 calculator, we connect the dots by making emissions data conveniently available to all our customers. This supports responsible sourcing decisions and ESG reporting, helping our customers lower their emissions with science-based data from using our cleaning machines."

The demand for sustainability data is growing, and the carbon footprint of products is among the most requested information from Nilfisk's customers. The CO2 calculator significantly reduces the time required for customer requests and tender preparation regarding emissions data. It enables comparisons within Nilfisk's product portfolio, supporting purchasing decisions towards low-carbon products.

"We hope our customers will use the calculator to find the use-phase emissions of selected machines and identify the most responsible options by comparing our different cleaning solutions. This tool can also provide useful information for those reporting on their carbon footprint," Malene Thiele says.

Products’ use phases covered, with more to come

The CO2 calculator provides annual emissions data for nearly all Nilfisk machines currently available for sale, with outputs measured in kilograms of CO2e per year. Calculations are based on specific machines, country of use, and weekly usage in hours. Currently, only the carbon footprint from the products' use phase is available, but Nilfisk aims to have the full carbon footprint of its products in the future.

Audited data

In calculating emissions data, Nilfisk relied on its own internal product experts, and data used to track progress on its own Science-based targets for Scope 3. Data on fuel emission factors are sourced from the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. For factors on country-specific electricity emissions, information from the International Energy Agency was used. Individual machines’ hourly energy consumption was calculated by Nilfisk’s own product development experts, whose work was then audited and validated an external auditor.
