Top 6 Vacuum Solutions for Combustible Dust Applications

Categories: Combustible Dust
Combustible dust incidents happen in almost every industry, almost every day. Fortunately, most of these don’t make headlines, in large part because safety-conscious companies are taking steps to control dust hazards before they have catastrophic consequences. If you haven’t yet implemented a dust control plan, there’s good news: it’s easy. Simple housekeeping is your most effective tool for eliminating the risks of combustible dust. To help you improve your housekeeping plan and keep your workers and your facility safe, we’ve compiled this list of six top vacuum solutions for combustible dust applications.

1. VHT EXP Series

Our VHT EXP Series consists of two continuous-duty explosion-proof/dust ignition-proof vacuums: the VHT437 EXP and the VHT456 EXP. Both vacuums safely collect explosive dust in general cleaning and process-integrated applications and are CSA-certified for use in Class I, Group D and Class II, Groups F and G environments. The main differences between the two are the water lift and the airflow. The VHT437 EXP has higher water lift, making it ideal for the collection of denser, bulkier materials. The VHT456 EXP, which has more airflow, is better for collecting lighter materials.

2. VHS110 EXP

For smaller facilities, the VHS110 EXP is a compact vacuum that’s CSA-certified for use in Class I, Group D and Class II, Groups E, F & G environments. It features PullClean filter cleaning technology and downstream HEPA filtration. If your facility contains combustible metal dusts, this is a good small-footprint solution for you. It’s available in an integrated immersion separator model for compliance with NFPA 484. Nilfisk-VHS110EXP

3. VHS110 Certified Class II Division 2 Vacuum

Ideal for cleaning overhead surfaces and around equipment, the VHS110 is a compact single-phase vacuum cleaner that’s NRTL-certified for Class II, Division 2 classified (hazardous) locations. Featuring a brushless motor, PullClean filter cleaning technology, and HEPA filtration, this vacuum provides excellent performance while meeting all NFPA 652 compliance requirements.

4. VHC200 EXP Hazardous Location Vacuum

For heavy-duty applications involving dense debris, the VHC 200 EXP meets the requirements for use in Class I, Group D and Class II, Groups E, F and G environments. This vacuum is pneumatic, with no moving parts, so the maintenance requirements are low. Like the VHS110 EXP, it’s available in an integrated immersion separator model for compliance with NFPA 484 for the safe collection of combustible metal dusts.

5. VHC EXP Series

The VHC100 EXP and VHC120 EXP are air-operated hazardous location vacuums that meet the requirements for use in Class I, Group D and Class II, Groups E, F & G environments. These vacuums feature the PullClean filter cleaning system and conserve energy by using 60% less compressed air than other pneumatic vacuums. They are available in integrated immersion separator models for NFPA 484 compliance. While the vacuums can be used in similar applications, the VHC120 EXP is a better choice when moving materials over a long distance or if more than one user will be operating the vacuum. 6. Integrated or stand-alone immersion separators

You probably noticed that several of the vacuums above can be retrofitted with an integrated immersion separator for NFPA 484 compliance. These separators are also available as stand-alone equipment. Immersion separators facilitate the safe collection of combustible metal dusts, in particular, Group E dusts, such as aluminum, magnesium, and other commercial alloys, by rendering them inert in a fluid bath.
